Polycarbonate (PC) sheets, also known as unbreakable glass, are widely used in various aspects of life due to their unique properties. PC sheets offer excellent sound insulation, making them a popular choice for noise barriers on overpasses and highways. With urban development and the expansion of transportation networks, more overpasses are being built near residential areas to alleviate traffic congestion. Some authorities use PC sheets as protective barriers on these overpasses to achieve sound insulation. Without these noise barriers, residents living near overpasses would suffer from the constant noise of heavy traffic.
PC sheets provide superior sound insulation compared to glass and acrylic of the same thickness. Under identical thickness conditions, PC sheets improve sound insulation by 3-4 decibels over glass, making them the material of choice for highway noise barriers. A 6mm PC sheet can reduce noise by up to 35 decibels, while a 3mm textured sheet can reduce noise by approximately 28 decibels. PC sheets are also suitable for indoor sound insulation, such as soundproof walls and partitions. Due to their smooth surface, PC sheets can be customized with prints or designs to enhance their aesthetic appeal and individuality.
Characteristics of Polycarbonate Sunlight Panels:
(1) Light Transmittance: PC sunlight panels offer up to 89% light transmittance, comparable to glass. UV-coated panels resist yellowing, hazing, and reduced transparency even after prolonged sun exposure. After ten years, light transmittance loss is only about 10%, whereas PVC loses 15–20%, and fiberglass loses 12–20%.
(2) Impact Resistance: The impact strength of PC panels is 250–300 times that of ordinary glass, 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and 2–20 times that of tempered glass. They are often called "unbreakable glass" or "sound steel."
(3) UV Protection: One side of the PC panel is co-extruded with a UV-resistant coating, while the other side features anti-condensation treatment. This combination provides UV protection, thermal insulation, and anti-fogging properties, making it ideal for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from UV damage.
(4) Lightweight: With a density about half that of glass, PC panels reduce transportation, handling, installation, and support framework costs.
(5) Flame Retardancy: According to the GB50222—95 standard, PC sunlight panels are classified as flame-retardant (B1 grade). The self-ignition point of PC panels is around 580°C, and they self-extinguish when removed from fire. They do not emit toxic gases during combustion and do not contribute to the spread of flames.
(6) Bendability: PC panels can be cold-bent on-site according to design plans to form arches, semi-circular roofs, and windows. The minimum cold-bending radius is approximately 175 times the panel thickness. They can also be heat-bent.
(7) Sound Insulation: PC sunlight panels provide significant sound insulation, outperforming glass and acrylic sheets of the same thickness. Under identical conditions, PC panels improve sound insulation by 5–9 decibels compared to glass, making them the preferred material for highway noise barriers.
(8) Energy Efficiency: PC sunlight panels keep interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. They have a lower thermal conductivity (K-value) than ordinary glass and other plastics, offering 7–25% better thermal insulation than glass of the same thickness. The thermal insulation efficiency of PC panels can reach up to 49%, significantly reducing heat loss in buildings with heating systems.
(9) Temperature Adaptability: PC panels do not become brittle at -40°C and remain stable at temperatures up to 125°C. Their mechanical and physical properties show no significant changes even in harsh environments.
(10) Weather Resistance: PC sunlight panels maintain stable physical properties within a temperature range of -40°C to 120°C. After 4,000 hours of artificial weathering tests, the yellowing index is only 2, and light transmittance loss is about 0.6%.
(11) Anti-Condensation: At an outdoor temperature of 0°C and an indoor temperature of 23°C with relative humidity below 80%, the inner surface of the material does not condense. Condensation flows along the surface without dripping.
